If you’re in any way connected with the gaming community, you’ll have heard of the disaster of a launch that EA’s latest instalment in the SimCity franchise suffered. The simply named SimCity brought a fresh new look and feel to the iconic simulator but server stability issues and game-breaking bugs plagued released.
Now, it’s coming to the Mac. Five months later, EA’s provided the game with a slew of major updates and officially released a native OS X version of the game. In this review, we’re going to take a look at the game in the state you’d pick it up on today’s OS X release, irrespective of historic problems with the original Windows iteration and its launch-day woes on OS X.

Papers, Please is a newly-released indie game that puts you in the role of a newly-placed border inspector who needs to analyse individual immigration requests, letting the applicants in or denying – and in some cases, detaining – them. The practice of DLC seasons in games is not one that has been well adopted by the hardcore gaming community. While some games are showcased by this community for offering real expansion to a title, many developers’ oversaturation of paid additional content shortly after release presents a controversial topic.
What if, to have even the most basic shot of a real gameplay experience, you needed to pay for some downloadable content? That’s the angle DLC Quest aims to exploit in a satirical commentary at the ever-evolving landscape of downloadable content and in-app purchases in games. DLC Quest is a game in it’s own right, with a Mario-esque “save the girl” storyline, but makes you unlock everything from the ability to have a pet to walking in both directions using in-game cash. Theme Hospital was, and remains, one of my favourite simulation games. In your time with the game, you build and manage a hospital that has to deal with a variety of illnesses and have the facilities to do so. But Theme Hospital is not the only government-funded accommodation simulator on the block.
Prison Architect is a business management and simulation game currently in development by Introversion Software. Prison Architect is all about building and maintaining a high-security prison, implementing facilities such as visitation and labour, and reacting to the dynamic needs of your inmates. Last month we took a look at The Walking Dead, a post-apocalyptic adventure game that offered up an enticing narrative worthy of the full 10/10 score that we awarded it. Now, developer Telltale Games has released 400 Days, a DLC installment that brings a new story to The Walking Dead universe while we wait for a full-on second season release.
The Walking Dead: 400 Days is canon to the storyline of the first season of The Walking Dead but, aside from the odd cameo and reference, it is an independent experience, presenting the tales of a new group of survivors. There’s little doubt that Minecraft has been an unprecedented success, attracting literally millions of sales in a reasonably short space of time for an indie developer. We’ve written about it before, from an initial review and extra coverage on new versions to a tutorial on setting up your own Minecraft server. It’s continued to be popular, enough that it’s every bit as relevant today as it was when we first wrote about it.
But what could we — and app developers of all types, not just games — learn from everyone’s favorite block-building simulator? In this article, we’re going to take a look at some key factors of Minecraft’s business and design that we hope can influence other Mac apps in the long run.

If you’ve followed gaming at all over the past year or so, you’ll have undoubtedly heard of The Walking Dead from Telltale Games (not to be confused with The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, a very different game based off of the TV series). The Walking Dead sees players explore an apocalyptic storyline following a zombie outbreak, making choices that ultimately effect how the story is told.
At E3 earlier this month, Telltale Games unveiled 400 Days, a DLC expansion that follows the events of game’s first season. In today’s review, while we wait for that July release, we’re going to take a look at what the first season is all about and hopefully convince those of you yet to have played it to, well, play it … or at least get excited about what’s coming up next.
