Any avid Mac user with an eye for style and simplicity will probably tell you they think iTunes is a bloated app. While it’s generally not in an Apple fanboy’s nature to question what Apple does or doesn’t do, iTunes is the one Apple app that gets the most “hate” from the same people who religiously love the tech company from Cupertino.

The acutely design conscious among us long for a simpler iTunes, one that — gasp — just plays music. All we really want is something to control our iTunes library, that looks pretty doing it.

Enter Bowtie. Bowtie is a free app created by the little software collective {13bold}. It functions as a controller for iTunes, and has a thriving customization community behind it creating new and beautiful themes all the time.

In this article, we’re going to look at just what Bowtie is, what it can do, and how to use it. Then I’ll go over a brief round-up of some of my favorite Bowtie skins to get you started controlling iTunes with beautifully polished pixels.

There is no tutorial for Braid. There is no how-to, no walkthrough, and nothing more than a simple introduction of which keys to hit when you want to move. In fact, when you first start up the game it takes a few seconds to even figure out what you’re doing. How could a game like that be any fun?

The fact is, Braid is a blast to play, even though it breaks all of the rules. It’s also one of the more addictive games out there, and now it’s available on the Mac App Store. Not only is it inexpensive, but it’s a great way to lose hours of your day, all while rolling time backwards.

Feeling lost yet? Don’t worry, we’ll explain after the jump.

The list is long and growing of applications designed to help you visually make sense of information. These range in price from free to several hundred dollars. MyThoughts from Mode de Vie Software lands somewhere in the middle of this spectrum, at $49.00.

While so many of the other applications heroically pack on features in an effort to appeal to everyone, MyThoughts takes the radical approach of being a mind mapping program that actually behaves just as a mind mapping program should.

This single-minded approach has earned my admiration. Let’s see if it should earn your software dollar.

The Getting Things Done methodology has an almost cult following, but generally trying to figure out the best way to manage our busy lives has an even larger following. Midnight Inbox is an application that helps you to get things done, very much inspired by the GTD methodology.

If you’re already a die-hard follower of this task management process, you’ll probably know immediately whether or not Midnight Inbox is for you. But what does a non-GTD’er think of this application? Read on to find out.

It’s official: The Mac App Store is here, and with it has come a whole host of games for the Mac connoisseur. In the flurry of opening day, one game stood out to us as something that would be fun to try out, yet casual enough to pick up and play any time.

It’s called Garage Inc., and it’s the story of a nice guy in Chicago who decides he wants to open an automotive repair business. But then the mob gets involved and, well, we’ll tell you the rest after the break!

Kindle for Mac brings your entire Kindle library to your Mac desktop. While the book purists may cringe at the idea of reading a book on your computer, having such quick and easy access to all your books (and their full text) is certainly convenient.

If you’ve ever had a free moment between tasks and regretted leaving your book or Kindle at home, Kindle for Mac solves that problem.

I hardly like to point it out but it’s now late January! The festivities of Christmas and the New Year have long since passed and some of us, in hindsight, are beginning to regret our delicious excess…

Gym membership is at an all time high and some of us may even consider the dreaded so-called ‘diet’. Deep down we all know that the only way to get healthy and lose unwanted weight is to work hard at eating well and actually doing some exercise! Fear not, there is help at hand. Could Foodurama be the perfect companion in our push towards a more healthy lifestyle?

Every day, we’re flooded with information. Some of it good, some of it bad, and some of it that we want to save for a rainy day.

Maybe you saw a cool tool on TV and you want to remember it later when you have some extra cash. Or possibly it’s a list of articles to help you build that Mac home theatre system you’ve been working on.

No matter what it is, wouldn’t it be nice to have a place to put everything for quick reference at a later date? For that, one option is Caboodle.

We make slideshow presentations for all kinds of occasions, and it’s often important for them to look smart and professional – be it to keep an audience interested or to present something to a client. Coupled with the Mac, iPhoto and iMovie both offer slideshow functionality, but both are pretty limited in what they can do.

If you find yourself needing to make slideshows fairly regularly, FotoMagico from Boinx Software may be of interest. FotoMagico is a very intuitive and professional application, perfect for putting together great looking slideshows with photos, video and audio.

I’ll be reviewing the Pro version of FotoMagico, but the standard version is much the same with some features removed. Read on to see what FotoMagico can do for you.
