Roundups

We’ve taken a look at various RSS reader solutions in the past, but quite a bit has changed over the past year or two. Most of the apps that we are showing you here are pretty new to the market (and some are not even yet out of beta!)

The RSS reader market has been getting bigger, and Google Reader has established its position as the de facto standard for syncing and managing feeds. But are you tired of using Google Reader’s web interface?

Today we’ll be featuring some of our favorite picks for the best RSS desktop apps that work with Google Reader.

As a Mac user, there are plenty of situations that require you to convert video between various formats. Maybe you want to convert that home movie your PC-using brother sent you to play on your iPad, or even convert your favorite YouTube videos for offline browsing on your PSP!

Back in 2009, we ran an article on video encoding options for Mac OS X. A lot has changed on the video-conversion scene since then, with new apps being released and most on that list being updated. Let’s take another look at the (new and old) options for video conversion and encoding.

The Mac App Store provides a great platform for game developers to reach customers that might not be familiar with paying for games frequently. It has a bit of everything – some casual games that would belong better on an iOS device, and some other games that are targeted more towards the “hardcore gamer” Mac crowd.

Whichever camp you fall into, I hope you’ll enjoy today’s roundup of our favourite selections in each category. These fun and addictive games are the perfect way to kill a little time at work, or delve into a full-on weekend gaming session!

Over the past week, the AppStorm team has been hanging out in San Francisco at Macworld 2011. Despite scaling back a little this year (and changing the venue to Moscone West), Macworld is still faring well without Apple.

As also seemed to be the case at WWDC in recent years, a big emphasis was placed on iOS – and the associated apps and accessories. Thankfully, after wading through a sea of iPhone cases and stands (which I’m sure will be adequately covered on iPhone.AppStorm!), there was still plenty to see for those primarily interested in the Mac platform.

In today’s post I’ll be looking at a handful of my favourite apps, hardware, and announcements over the course week, along with sharing a few thoughts on our general experience at Macworld.

Radio is a technology that has evolved a great deal, and it doesn’t seem to show any sign of disappearing. It’s very convenient to just turn on the radio and get a continuous stream of music for hours, without having to choose anything yourself. It’s very practical, and a brilliant wat to find new music!

However, local radio stations aren’t usually very good. Sometimes you want to listen to a station that plays a certain genre, or a specific talk show that isn’t aired on your local radio stations. That’s where online radio comes in.

There’s an amazing number of online radio stations out there, and plenty of variety to choose from. But of course, you’ll need something to listen to those stations. Today, we present you some of our favorite software picks for radio listening and recording.

The Mac App Store has brought a few new fantastic releases, but the majority of software stealing the show has been around for some time. And although these brilliant applications aren’t new, they are worth mentioning once again for new Mac users, and those who need a quick reminder.

Today I’ll be showcasing ten of my favourite free Mac App Store apps. These wonderful pieces of software won’t cost you a dime, but will go a long way towards improving and refining your Mac experience. I hope you find them as useful as I do!

Have you ever heard anybody say that paper outlets, like newspapers, magazines and books, will soon be extinct? While we have seen some newspapers and magazines move to digital services, it’s still hard to imagine a world without paper books. However, this has partly become a reality with devices like the Kindle and the iPad.

The advantages of eBooks are hard to overlook. They take much less physical space, they are cheaper, and they offer more features and interaction, like the “popular highlights” feature on Kindle devices.

Have you made the move yet? I have owned a Kindle for a few months now and I have come to love the little device. Whatever device you use, you’ll need some sort of app on your Mac to buy and interact with these eBooks. Here are some of our recommendations.
