20 Stunning Themes for Mac OS X

Changing the theme of your Mac allows you to completely alter the look and feel of the interface. We posted an overview of the two main applications able to deal with themes earlier this week; ShapeShifter, which is best for pre-Leopard systems, and Magnifique, which is Leopard compatible.

Once you’ve settled on an application to try, you’ll need to find a few beautiful themes to apply. Fortunately, we’ve gone away and researched 10 stunning examples for each application, so whether you’re running ShapeShifter or Magnifique you’ll be spoiled for theme-ing choice!

ShapeShifter Themes

Milk

theme_milk

Milk is a simple, white theme with a few different colour tints. I love the simplicity – it’s one of my favorites, and is also available for Magnifique.

Eylo

Eylo is a bright and “digital” theme, modeled slightly from the Halo series of games. It’s not for everyone, but certainly looks very different.

Neon

neon

A delightfully professional theme, with a concave upper left corner and a aluminium finish. Made to match Apple’s new laptops (just a few years in advance…)

Canum

canum

Colorful, simple, not overly rounded, and mixes professionalism with a friendly appeal.

Somatic

An unusual, cartoony theme with a whole range of accompanying icons for use on your Desktop or Dock.

Amora

A crazy, digital theme. Really different and interesting, and will certainly get you noticed when flipping your laptop open!

Cold

The first dark theme we’ve featured, this one manages to remain functional whilst offering a completely different style for your Mac.

V23

192_v23

Another dark one, with a matte appearance. Thoroughly usable, and also includes themes for iTunes, Quicktime, Mail and Safari.

LineDeLuxe

Developed with an aim to allow you to look at the monitor without getting blinded by the “light” original OS X Aqua…

Pro LCD

Remember the original iPod’s display? A brilliant way to recreate the classic feel on your desktop.

Magnifique Themes

Aqua Inspirat

A great, simple toolbar which retains the classic colours whilst making everything more professional. Has some wonderful accompanying themes too.

Disinmaso

Disinmaso is a little mix between two greaat themes of Susumu : UMASO and Disingenuous. Disinmaso is composed of the best of those two themes.

Kaer B3

kaer

Another simple, metallic theme with a sleek and professional appeal.

Liscio

liscio

Dark, with very subtle toolbar buttons and interesting scroll bars. Not a huge fan of the font, but this can be changed.

Mistikons

mistikons

Available with both a dark and light menu bar, I really like this theme – it’s subtle, professional, and easy to adapt to.

Siro

siro

A touch futuristic, with an ‘LED’ style highlight behind various elements. Takes on a plastic looking feel, and is also available for ShapeShifter.

Rhino

rhino

A different mix of dark and light elements, and some really nice looking scroll bars. Rhino needs more work in a couple of areas, but is definitely worth trying out. It’s also available for ShapeShifter.

Veritas

veritas

This theme combines the thin scrollbar style of Siro, with a simple toolbar button design. It’s great at getting out of your way when you’re working.

Umaso

umaso

Really taking on board the ‘plastic’ look, this theme is a ShapeShifter port, and really moves away from the typical aluminum OS X appearance.

Metal Muku

Not a huge departure from the regular graphite theme, but with a more ‘matte’ effect and simpler graphics.

Conclusion

As you can see, a huge range of different themes are available both through ShapeShifter and Magnifique. They range from sleek and professional to bright and cartoony. However, before you rush ahead and download any of them I’d strongly recommend reading our Introduction to Changing OS X Themes so that you’re aware of compatibility issues and what to look out for.

Have fun, and please feel free to share any extra themes you like which haven’t been covered!
