20 Stunning Themes for Mac OS X

Changing the theme of your Mac allows you to completely alter the look and feel of the interface. We posted an overview of the two main applications able to deal with themes earlier this week; ShapeShifter, which is best for pre-Leopard systems, and Magnifique, which is Leopard compatible.

Once you’ve settled on an application to try, you’ll need to find a few beautiful themes to apply. Fortunately, we’ve gone away and researched 10 stunning examples for each application, so whether you’re running ShapeShifter or Magnifique you’ll be spoiled for theme-ing choice!

ShapeShifter Themes

Milk

theme_milk

Milk is a simple, white theme with a few different colour tints. I love the simplicity – it’s one of my favorites, and is also available for Magnifique.

Eylo

theme_eylo

Eylo is a bright and “digital” theme, modeled slightly from the Halo series of games. It’s not for everyone, but certainly looks very different.

Neon

neon

A delightfully professional theme, with a concave upper left corner and a aluminium finish. Made to match Apple’s new laptops (just a few years in advance…)

Canum

canum

Colorful, simple, not overly rounded, and mixes professionalism with a friendly appeal.

Somatic

An unusual, cartoony theme with a whole range of accompanying icons for use on your Desktop or Dock.

Amora

preview-1

A crazy, digital theme. Really different and interesting, and will certainly get you noticed when flipping your laptop open!

Cold

168_cold-12

The first dark theme we’ve featured, this one manages to remain functional whilst offering a completely different style for your Mac.

V23

192_v23

Another dark one, with a matte appearance. Thoroughly usable, and also includes themes for iTunes, Quicktime, Mail and Safari.

LineDeLuxe

greensteel-betajpg

Developed with an aim to allow you to look at the monitor without getting blinded by the “light” original OS X Aqua…

Pro LCD

Remember the original iPod’s display? A brilliant way to recreate the classic feel on your desktop.

Magnifique Themes

Aqua Inspirat

picture-18

A great, simple toolbar which retains the classic colours whilst making everything more professional. Has some wonderful accompanying themes too.

Disinmaso

previewzf5

Disinmaso is a little mix between two greaat themes of Susumu : UMASO and Disingenuous. Disinmaso is composed of the best of those two themes.

Kaer B3

kaer

Another simple, metallic theme with a sleek and professional appeal.

Liscio

liscio

Dark, with very subtle toolbar buttons and interesting scroll bars. Not a huge fan of the font, but this can be changed.

Mistikons

mistikons

Available with both a dark and light menu bar, I really like this theme – it’s subtle, professional, and easy to adapt to.

Siro

siro

A touch futuristic, with an ‘LED’ style highlight behind various elements. Takes on a plastic looking feel, and is also available for ShapeShifter.

Rhino

rhino

A different mix of dark and light elements, and some really nice looking scroll bars. Rhino needs more work in a couple of areas, but is definitely worth trying out. It’s also available for ShapeShifter.

Veritas

veritas

This theme combines the thin scrollbar style of Siro, with a simple toolbar button design. It’s great at getting out of your way when you’re working.

Umaso

umaso

Really taking on board the ‘plastic’ look, this theme is a ShapeShifter port, and really moves away from the typical aluminum OS X appearance.

Metal Muku

Not a huge departure from the regular graphite theme, but with a more ‘matte’ effect and simpler graphics.

Conclusion

As you can see, a huge range of different themes are available both through ShapeShifter and Magnifique. They range from sleek and professional to bright and cartoony. However, before you rush ahead and download any of them I’d strongly recommend reading our Introduction to Changing OS X Themes so that you’re aware of compatibility issues and what to look out for.

Have fun, and please feel free to share any extra themes you like which haven’t been covered!

  • Wow, plain beautiful.

  • hey, your article inspired me to design a theme myself. are there any good tutorials out there for that?
    cheers!

  • The only one i liked was Mistikons

    • i no right

    • Pro LCD isn’t too bad, it actually has a pretty rad look to it.

    • you look very pritty and hot

  • These are the same old Shapeshifter themes from 5 years ago .. I can’t see anything new here ..

Didn’t “themers” make a new concept in 5 years ?

This is sad .. really sad !

    • “Themers” haven’t been able to progress their designs because Shapeshifter does not work in the Leopard OS, and this Magnifique software is relatively new.

And if you think about it, there are tons of new themes that have been submitted in the past 5 years, but most of them are horribly ugly and made by people that know nothing about design. Which means the themes posted here still hold their own even by today’s standards because no matter which way you look at it, good design is good design.

  • OSX doesn’t really allow for much in the way of themes other than some color changes, buttons, etc… Add to that the extreme difficult of building the massive amount of elements required to fully theme the OS and you have the situation we’re in – which is a complete lack of good looking themes.

Unsanity is basically a dead company, with the original ownership having left the company, and Shapeshifter all but officially declared dead. It’s a shame that we can’t theme OSX, the way you can with Windows.

    • Agree., OSX, Apple’s self claimed the most advanced OS in the world cannot be themed. It is a bit joke to me not to let a user do what they want to do yet only Apple’s way.

No matter what the original theme is damn good or not., I want to change it in my own way., on my very own computer.

  • I prefer the default theme.

    • I agree. Why change something that’s already pretty much perfect.

      • Because there’s things that’s even better (SoliQ (Deviantart))

      • Something pretty much perfect for you does not mean it is perfect for everyone, at least for me. I believe this is also true for million of users out there.

Laptop and OS should just be a toy or a tool to fulfill what you need do in your own way. It should not be a religion.

      • Perfect?! Are you on crack?!

    • Why theme it? We don’t re-theme our TV remotes, or our keyboards… we don’t re-theme our Cable DVR interface… we don’t go renaming shell commands from rm to wipe, or copy to dupe, and there is a reason. It’s a freaking nightmare to support something when it’s been completely screwed up by someone “customizing” their computer. Ever had someone call you and ask what the pink pointer box thingy is on the menu button in the top right? The WHAT WHERE?!? Personally I’d rather write software for a standard and live with it than support a bunch of 20pt yellow on pink characters in an oval shaped window because someone thinks it looks cool :P

  • Nothing real beautiful for Leopard so far, still waiting for a theme to replace iLeopard.

    • Hi i like the default theme for mac os x . if you need the universal remote for your mac then this is the place to go.

  • Don’t like one of them. What about the „KISS Me“ Theme. I love it!

  • Why you’d want to change the beautiful OS X interface is beyond me. I liked the Cold theme, though – the blacks look beautiful.

  • Blasphemy. I don’t see the need to theme such a beautiful OS.

  • Modding your OS X theme is like drawing some flame graphics on a Ferrari -.-“

    • THAT WOULD BE FUCKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a Porsche with pin stripes down the side, and flames coming off of the stripes already, but if you know someone who can flame up my Ferrari, pleaswe let me know.

  • Very good!

I’m using a theme like Tiger right now!
Because the blue apple in the main menu …

    =D

  • Thanks for featuring my Theme Port, Rhino.
Thanks to Toner for the original theme.
An update to Rhino with some fixes will be coming soon.

  • VERY VERY VERY OLD THEMES….

  • Magnifique doesn’t actually mod the menubar – maybe it’s to do with the Leopard update.

  • Didn’t knew till now about this, so thank you for the great post!

  • I’m using Mistikons dark right now, :D. I love the black menubar.

  • how do u download these?????

  • i’m using linux right now, and loving it.

    hands down, most customizable OS

    • connor please download mac os x 10.6.3 ( iATKOS S3 V2 ) from torrent and install in you pc and enjoy !

    • hae,, sir how i could i change my window view in 3d? like in mac 3d? view rotates from window to window,, i need that plz tell me,, thanks,,

  • Shape Shifter doesn’t works with mac os x 10.6.x .. so please post some themes for the latest OS also.
    thanks

  • very nice themes thanks

  • THOSE ARE COLORLESS & BORING I GIVE UP WITH THEMING ITS FCKING POINTLESS ON A MAC COS IF YOU HAVE 10.5 YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT BOTHER EVERTHING BEING DEVELOPED STOPPED DEAD LAST QUARTER OF 2009 I GUESS I WILL JUST HAVE TO MESS AROUND WITH MY THEMES ON WINDOWS 7 WHERE EVERYTHING IS NOT GREY OR BLUE TOSSING APPLE NUMPTYS

    • Ladies and gentlemen, Too Much Coffee Troll.

    • Windows DOES have great themes (regardless of the bad OS) — but hasn’t one noticed that it STILL (with Windows 7) thinks that default Windows ’95 theme should be included. Who the hell wants that??

  • ITS NOW MARCH 2010 GET YOUR FCKING FINGERS OUT DEVELOPERS

  • This is a very old post – Shapeshifter has been “broken” for several OS updates now. With the latest Snow Leopard Unsanity has yet to make any effort in updating. Gathering the way Apple moves forward, Unsanity will likely not keep up.

    That being said…

I love Mac, and it depresses me that Windows has so many amazing themes while Mac theming is mediocre at best. When will Mac catch up? The OS and apps are fantastic – but it’s theming… blah.

  • It’s amazing to me that a company like Apple has such a wonderful OS that kills anything Microsoft so badly, and you can’t change the themes. This is like having a Ferrari with beautiful lines, earthshaking power, incredible handling, and only comes in primer gray. What the heck!!!

  • Just in case people haven’t noticed, it has been recommended that you DO NOT use Magnifique on Snow Leopard. At least, according to this anyway: http://magnifique.pcwizcomputer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=51&start=0

It looks pretty real, but I don’t know for sure. Also there is this forum page from MacRumors: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-840205.html

Just posting this as a warming to people who like their mac to not be worthless!

  • what’s wrong with the default theme?

  • Is there a Windows 7 theme for OS X? I’m tired of seeing these ugly blue scrollbars…

  • Thank you for nice theme

  • prefer default

    • Seriously? Not good

  • Thank for nice template.

  • These themes are pretty nice I like it. NO COMMENT but anyways. Forget those haters or whatever or those random BASHI-BAZOUKS I liked it! :)

  • Top post. I look forward to reading more. Thank you for sharing.

  • Good post. I look forward to reading more. Thank for sharing.

  • I’m such a noob. How the hell do I download them? I tried downloading the Liscio one, went to the DevART site to get the link, but when I unzipped it.. well, apparently I need an application for it. Help? :c

  • Nothing is cool over here just visit website:www.appstoreos x\themes.com.

  • i downloaded one and it didn’t come out right and all i want is my original theme back, it sucks. anyone help me?

  • Any true Apple purist would just take the default theme and never think beyond what they give you.

  • Nothing real beautiful for Leopard so far, still waiting for a theme to replace iLeopard

  • Cool. I hardly ever see anyone modify OSX. Its no where near what you can do with Windows as far as 3rd part customization but it is still pretty cool knowing you have options.

  • Download the app today .. the AMORA theme, desire to return to the original appearance of Mac .. like I can do that???

I did not like the look of the Mac that gave Amora, and I want to change the original appearance is factory instead of Mac.

if you were so kind to tell me what I have to do to adjust the appearance of my Mac, the Mac Amora the original.

thanks 4 for your time !

  • it was beautifull paintings

  • Jeez, I didn’t look at my setting before I downloaded this, now my mac is f***ed over and I cant revert it back.
Perhaps an update or two to the downloads and the site would be nice to stop this from happening to anyone else.
