Weekly Poll: Have You Ever Purchased a Used Mac?

Let’s face it: a new Mac can be rather pricey. There’s many reasons that they’re a great value, from their build quality to the components inside to the software they run, but at the end of the day, if you only have a limited budget for a Mac, it can be tough to find the Mac you need.

We’ve talked before about getting your Mac ready for sell, which is a popular way to recoup some of the cost of your old Mac when you’re getting a new machine. But what about buying a used Mac instead of getting the latest model straight from Apple?

The good thing is, there’s quite the active market for used Macs, and you can usually find almost any Mac you can think of for sell on Craigslist, eBay, or from a local shop. If buying used sounds a bit too risky to you, you could always go for a refurbished Mac straight from Apple, where you can get as much as $200 off many Macs.

So, have you ever purchased a used Mac? How’d it work out for you?

  • Last year I bought a 2011 MBA from eBay that was only a few weeks old and got it £250 cheaper than straight from Apple. Best thing I ever did, it was just as new.

  • I bought a refurbished Macbook online in September 2009. It’s the one released in summer 2009.
I thought it was gonna be like used, old or so. I was astonished when I received the package from Apple. It’s good as new with no scratch. I’m still using it now.
    It saved me $250 :D

  • Last week I bought 2012 mid macbook air 11” 128 GB ssd from Ebay and that was used only 10 days, it is fantastic. I saved 200 dollars + tax.

  • I’ve purchased an Apple Cinema Display used from a friend of mine. I also bought a lightly-used G5 tower. In that case, the guy wanted the model with a better video card so he only had it for a month or so.

  • I have just got a cinema display from ebay, and it’s great… I also got a refurbished macbook pro from apple and apart from the plain box and it coming with a bigger hard drive than spec’d, I couldn’t tell that it wasn’t brand new.

  • I once bought a Mac Classic II for $1.
