10 Addictive Mac Games for Under $20

Believe it or not, the Mac is catching up Windows as a platform for rich, immersive gaming. Whilst big budget games such as ToCA Race Driver 3 and Call of Duty 4 really push the envelope in Mac gaming, you don’t necessarily need to empty your wallet to enjoy an addictive game or two.

We’ll be taking a look at ten different games – each costing less than $20 – which can provide hours of entertainment. Apple create great tools for business, education and design – but there’s no harm in letting the big kid out now and then!

World of Goo

World of Goo

World of Goo

After inclusion in the latest MacHeist bundle, World of Goo’s popularity has really taken off. It’s a physics based puzzle / construction game, centering around Millions of “Goo Balls”. You interact with them in a beautiful environment, navigating through levels full of surprises.

Price: $20
Developer: 2D Boy
Requires: OS X 10.4 or later

Bejeweled

Bejeweled

Bejeweled

I’m sure many of you will have come across Bejeweled previously – the goal is to match sparkling gems three at a time to make them burst in showers of color and points. It’s deceptively simple, but infuriatingly fun.

Price: $20
Developer: Popcap
Requires: OS X 10.3.9 or later

Pangea Arcade

Pangea Arcade

Pangea Arcade

Composed of three different games, Pangea Arcade takes you back to the days of classic gaming. Destroy asteroids in Nucleus, defend your base in Warheads, or recreate the retro space invaders feel with Firefall. They’re all great, and look fantastic.

Price: $14.95
Developer: Pangea Software
Requires: PowerPC G4 1ghz, or any Intel Mac, Mac OS 10.3.9 or later.

Multiwinia

Multiwinia

Multiwinia

Stick men as never before. A faced paced, action game with a completely unique twist. Mix strategy with action, and play online with friends for a more immersive experience. Worth checking out.

Price: $19
Developer: Ambrosia
Requires: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later

Enigmo 2

Enigmo 2

Enigmo 2

Enigmo 2 is a 3D puzzle game where you construct mechanisms to direct lasers, plasma, and water to toggle switches, deactivate force-fields, and eventually get them to their final destination.

Price: $19.95
Developer: Pangea Software
Requires: PowerPC G4 1ghz, or any Intel Mac, Mac OS 10.3.9 or later.

Peggle

Peggle

Peggle

The idea is to fire a silver ball at the top of the screen, aiming to hit all the orange pegs on the way down. Not immediately grabbing, but the gorgeous graphics and well thought-out level progression makes it an instant classic.

Price: $20
Developer: Popcap
Requires: OS X 10.3.9 or later

Etch a Sketch

Etch a Sketch

Etch A Sketch

I’ve always been fascinated by Etch A Sketch, and this game is quirkily centered around the classic childhood toy. Far more than just a drawing tool, it’s definitely worth trying out the demo.

Price: $14.99
Developer: TOP
Requires: OS: Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5 CPU: Intel

Classic Solitaire

Classic Solitaire

Classic Solitaire

A fun and easy-to-use collection of 46 favourite solitaire games for your Mac, with big, readable cards. If you’re a fan of card games, this is an absolute “must have” app.

Price: Free
Developer: DogMelon
Requires: Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later

Jumpman

Jumpman

Jumpman

It’s incredibly simple (with terribly old-school graphics), but takes an aged concept and adds an interesting new twist. The idea of seeing each subsequent level behind the one currently being played appeals particularly, and there’s a full level-editor included.

Price: Free
Developer: MSM
Requires: Anything!

Mac Games Arcade

Mac Games Arcade

Mac Games Arcade

We’re finishing with an app which isn’t a game itself, but provides a fantastic mechanism for exploring this area of software for yourself. Mac Games Arcade is a simple way to download and purchase games for OS X, with a bunch of fun software waiting to be discovered!

Price: Free
Developer: Mac Games Arcade
Requires: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later

Conclusion

If you’re not sure where to start, any of the games mentioned above can give you a good idea for what gaming on OS X has to offer. The big studio blockbusters are worth checking out, but a small budget can also provide a huge amount of entertainment.

Happy gaming, and let me know your favorites in the comments!

World of Goo was delightful yet a little sinister. I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys a little puzzle, it isn’t platformist. Now I just have to get OCD on all the levels…

Jumpman is something in the treasure box. The deconstruction is absolute! World of Goo is another pearl in this treasure box…

    Keep up! :)

I found my current passions when I was a child. I was interested in art, photography, and bicycling even then. Due to the need to make a living, the interest in art morphed into an interest in graphic design in general, and website design in particular.
