The release of Safari 5 brought about a new extension system that allows developers to create and distribute helpful and fun tools similar to those found in Firefox.
Since Apple’s own Safari extension list hasn’t yet gone public, we’ve compiled a list of 30 of our favorite extensions for you to download and try. We’ll also walk you through the process of how to install extensions in Safari, so everything is clear and simple!
Installing Extensions
To install an extension after you download it, simply double click it. Next go under “Develop” in the Safari menu bar and select “Enable Extensions.”
After doing this, you should have an extensions tab in under Preferences in Safari.
The Extension Window
This window is fairly simple and allows you to see all of the extensions you have installed. You can choose to activate or deactivate each extension or completely uninstall one if you don’t have any further use for it.
It’s that easy, now start downloading and give it a try for yourself!

Anyone know if there’s a firebug extension in the works? Not really fond of Safari’s built it inspector.
I highly doubt it. Firebug Lite (http://getfirebug.com/firebuglite) has been around for ages but with the built in Web Inspector, there doesn’t really seem much point in them building a standalone extension.
The Web Inspector just takes a bit of getting used to.
The developer announced on his twitter-page, that he will (try) develope a standalone extension for Safari 5 ;)
Yeah, one thing I would like web inspector to do is Live CSS edition with intellisense. Please consider that if you plan to develop an extension.

Try Glims for find-as-you-type – it does that and a million other things.
Fine collection. My weather extension: http://playground.ebiene.de/2568/wetter-safari-erweiterung/ – without location codes, with tooltip data. Sorry, german only (thanks Apple for the missing translation support).
I love some of the hyperbole attached to some of these extensions. SaveTabs, for instance:

Gaping hole? Is clicking “Add Bookmark for these X Tabs” in the Bookmarks menu that awful?
I’ve also seen lots of extensions for reopening the previous session… but Safari already does that!
No, but it’s a pain when other browsers will do it for you automatically. I know that my solution isn’t the most perfect but it does make it that little bit easier.
Yep, it really is that horrible. :)
On a daily basis I want to resume sessions without having to constantly bookmark, re-open from bookmarks, and then spend time deleting all the bookmarks once I’m done with the pages.
Depending on what my work for the day is, it’s not unusual for me to have 5-6 windows running each with 10+ tabs in each.
I’ve had this functionality with SafariStand (via SIMBL) long before extensions were officially supported and it’s an enormous time saver I wouldn’t want to live without now.

- Youtube5, you can get the clicktoflash extension at http://github.com/mattball/ClickToFlash-safari-extension which I find better
- Better Google Reader, I’ll vote for Snow Leopard Google Reader at http://mariusth.channelwood.org/SafariExtensions/

How about a Delicious Bookmarks extension that lets you log in with your yahoo! id? Any tips?

I don’t like how Safari handle the resizing thing by default, I prefer the Firefox one (click to fullscreen/click to go back)
@Katie – use the Delicious bookmarklet – works great. (There is a Delicious extension but it doesn’t do anything more than the bookmarklet.) Plus you can trigger your bookmarklets in Bookmark Bar with Cmd-#.
My favorites not listed above:
* AutoPagerize – automatically loads next page when scrolling down. Terrific for browsing search results or reading paginated news articles (doesn’t work on all sites).
* HsRestoreSession (like Save Tabs but does so automatically and allows multiple sets; similar to Safari Stand of yesteryear).
* Hinter – Trigger links with the keyboard.
* InstapaperBeyond – Adds key commands to Instapaper.
Useful dev tool extensions:
* Xapathi – Highlights Xpath expression
* Safari Validator (with Tidy, W3C).
One more: TextStatistics (word/character count of selected text on page).

I created a nifty extension for people who are using Spotify: http://johanbrook.com/safari.
You can right click on a song or artist in a web page, and either go directly to the item in Spotify, or view more info about it in Safari. You can also search for tracks in Safari.

Are buttons on the window really the best way to access a half dozen or more extensions? I have to hope that Apple has a plan to address this (unless they have already and I am missing it), but the thought of having 6-10 extensions buttons stretching across my browser window is mortifying.
Is there an extension that blocks or eliminates those double-underline ad popups one finds on so many pages?

I may be completely blind, but I have tried several times – without any luck so far – to find a way to get around Googling straight out of the URL bar in Safari 5. Keywurl seems to do the trick in earlier version of Safari, but is not updated to work properly with Safari 5. Do I really need an extension to be able do this?
I too would like to find something that works for Safari 5 to do this. I’d rather use safari than chrome, but quickly became addicted to typing search terms straight in the URL bar in my interactions with chrome.
