What Did We Miss?

Now that you’ve seen our top 20, let us know what your favorite DJ apps are. Leave a link in the comments below and tell us about your favorite features.

  • http://www.pominperth.com Adam

MIssed the biggest and the best Ableton – http://www.ableton.com/live-8, otherwise a great list of apps

  • http://bjango.com/ Marc Edwards

Another vote for Ableton. It’s actually the only one you need on the list :P

  • OID

Well I guess Live is left out because it isn’t just for dj purposes only but also for writing and producing music. It is true that you can dj with it but Live is also exceptional tool for- well, live! By this I mean that the software is great for performing things too when ones choice is not to make a tasty selection of records blended togheter.

  • Ben Hayman

Depending on my mood it is either Djay, Traktor or Live. Most likely Live considering I do everything in that app.

  • http://www.basilgloo.com Basil Gloo

My vote is also for Ableton Live.

And another one software you’ve forgot – Deckadance
    http://deckadance.image-line.com/

  • kcirtem

I was shocked to not find Live. It does everything. Anyone used Virtual DJ? How is it?

  • http://twitter.com/lessfame Franky

    YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • David

    Renoise, and ofcourse ableton.

  • Peter

Mixed in Key – the harmonic software used by many DJ’s.
    http://www.mixedinkey.com/
However, apparently results are not significantly better than the free Rapid Evolution 2 or the commercial beatunes – see http://www.djtechtools.com/2009/11/02/key-analysis-software-smackdown/

    • Tolga ERGIN

      any try-out version of mixedinkey?

  • Adi

    CmOn :) where is Deckadance????
    http://www.deckadance.image-line.com

  • Chris

am I the only one that uses mix vibes cross?

  • Ryan

Hey, great list, however there are way too many options! Perhaps in subsequent roundups you could give and indication to what you found to be the best application and for various uses e.g. the best for professionals, beginners etc. Give some opinion.

    Thanks

    • daba

      +1

Which am i meant to choose? Trialing all of em is a waste of my time.

  • http://www.batatastudio.com Luis Maria

Great post!!!! i want to know software about VJ!!!
    See you!!!

    • Adi
    • VJ noob

Aria does VJ, but it is pretty basic, no effects but if all you need is to mix videos it works. Virtual DJ does video too, but I found it to run slow when using all of the effects plug ins. I tried DJMixerPro and simply could not get the videos to play at all. If you have wads of cash laying around Pioneer makes great video mixing gear, but it is expensive.

  • OID

kcirtem: Definitely Traktor over Virtual DJ. Switched from one to another and there’s no going back!

Though, haven’t got a chance to test other softwares widely used in the scene such as Serato or Torq. But on the other hand don’t see any point changing working combination to another similar.

  • Louden Bainbridge

Great list, thanks. I’m a simple guy, so the new Aria app looks great. It’s the only one on the list that does the karaoke too, and I found you can buy karaoke songs in it. thanks again!

  • Gabe Ruiz

Hey guys im having a ball try out all of these i have read a lot of your posts which ones do you think is the best im a new dj to the scene im a new dj but with computer and mini deck dj i know some of you will make fun of me but im starting out any tips and tricks?

    Thanks guys

    • Felipe Augusto Dornelas

If you aim to be a pro, use Traktor Pro or Serator ITCH software. But you must acquire specialized hardware:

      * No-latency, multiple output sound card. I recommend the Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ or Audio 2 DJ.
      * A good MIDI controller. There are plenty of options available today, for all needs and budgets. I’m pretty enjoying the Traktor Kontrol X1, but it requires an external mixer (Pioneer DJM-400 is a great mixer to have at home).

    • Jan

Try djay (first on the list). A lot of my friends have used it to DJ parties.
      http://www.djay-software.com

U can use it without any special hardware too!

  • Jesus

I’ve never been a fan of software for mixing. That destroy all the “magic” of mixing with your hands, and adjusting the pitch with your hear….

Today, a baby con do a live session without problems.

    Technics sl 1200 4ever

    • http://www.forwardmusic.wordpress.com Robin

This is why with today’s technology, you shouldn’t just be mixing. In order to show some degree of skill, you should be doing things that weren’t possible 20 years ago.

It’s a shame that technology is being misused and anyone with a macbook can DJ now…

      • John Doe

Robin, That’s a real bullshit argument… Technology and innovations change over the time. You just have to learn to re-adapt and not feel threathened. Instead, create your own unique ‘thing’ and niche. Embrace new possibilities, or would you rather be a caveman again and be able to only buy a car, which has one colour and can be only a T-Ford? … tsss. If you don’t like change… you stick with the old and become a dinosaur. All others save loads of time and be more creative with new possibilities. And the thing is; you don’t HAVE to use all.

    • Felipe Augusto Dornelas

Yeah, a baby can “mix” today, but that doesn’t mean it will sound good!

    • Booty p

You are a dinosaur, get real and ger with the 21st Century.

What happened to itch? While it may require a midi controller it’s one of the best software available!

    • Felipe Augusto Dornelas

I agree, Serato ITCH is a must have!

The author listed so many crappy applications, but forgot one of the best.

  • http://www.templateslord.com Marko Petkovic

I wish I checked my RSS feed app few days earlier when I was looking for DJ apps :)
Anyway, good info – straight to bookmarks.

  • Felipe Augusto Dornelas

    Traktor Pro for the win!

  • Felipe Augusto Dornelas

Virtual DJ is the most popular, but not as professional as Traktor Pro, Serato ITCH or Ableton Live, IMHO.

  • james

Finally something to help me get closer to my DJ-ing dreams! Okay maybe not quite, but I think I will have a lot of fun experimenting on these DJ software. Do they also come available for PCs? I wonder if I practice enough would I get the chance to be picked up by a record label and begin my musical journey as a professional DK like David Guetta.

One of us is a vinyl-dj who uses traktor by now. Few days ago he gave me a little insight and I was really amazed by the simplicity. Its a great tool for a musician. I will definitely use any DJ-Software to make music.

I would never call me a DJ when using a computer, because Im not “jockeying discs”… Otherwise… If you say DJ, everyone knows thats the guy who makes music…
