Desktops can be boring. Not the desktop that your computer rests on, but the desktop that resides inside your computer. Some of you are probably a little OCD about keeping the desktop spotless, while others just chuck everything on it until the screen is filled with files and folders. Regardless, they’re boring. But should they be?
Bump Technologies certainly don’t think so with BumpTop, which was just released for Mac OS X a matter of days ago. BumpTop completely transforms your Desktop into a 3D ‘room’ where you can spread files around, stack them, and stick them to the walls as if they were on a real desk.
Everyone has an inherent fascination with desktop wallpapers. Operating system developers spend a long time shipping the perfect set with a new OS release, even commissioning photographers to shoot suitable, vivid images.
We’ve certainly covered wallpapers in the past – rounding up gorgeous Mac wallpapers, a selection of iPhone backgrounds, and even running our own wallpaper competition. Today we’re looking at 7 different places to find your own wallpaper inspiration. Hopefully you’ll find something you like!
There are countless screensavers available for showing beautiful photographs and funky swirling graphics – we’ve even rounded up a selection previously. But what if you’d like your monitor to show something more useful?
Today we’re looking at 30 different screensavers that will inspire and inform you. Whether that’s keeping you up-to-date with news, showing information about incoming messages, recent tweets, or even helping you learn a new language!
Another huge thank you to everyone who took the time to enter our desktop wallpaper competition. We’ve already announced the winners, and today we’re making all the other entries available for use on your desktop.
Just over 160 of the best wallpapers are rounded up here. You can click on any image to download the full-size version (each wallpaper is at least 1920x1200px in size). Entries are also available on Flickr.
After a great deal of deliberation, we have decided upon the winners of our desktop wallpaper competition (in conjunction with PSDTuts+). Thank you to everyone who entered. There were so many fantastic entries, choosing only ten winners was incredibly difficult.
The brief was to design an original wallpaper with a theme centred around Apple, AppStorm, or Lightning. We had a fantastic selection of entries – some covering all three of these areas, others covering one or two. The winning wallpapers cover a broad range of styles and techniques.
Without further ado, here are the ten lucky winners:
One thing I try to keep on my Mac is a clean and organized desktop. Sometimes when working on larger projects I let it slip and never really get around to cleaning it up like I should. Eventually, when I do get up the courage to try and organize all of the files into folders and subfolders, I find myself wondering where I put that one file I need at that moment and wishing I would have just left everything as it was.
DeskShade from MacRabbit is an application that allows you to cover up all of that clutter with a background image of your choice. It also allows you to require a password to unlock the computer and get back to the main desktop so you can see and use all of that clutter again while preventing others from beating you to it.
An intriguing but widely overlooked feature released with Mac OS X Leopard is the ability to share screens wirelessly with other computers in a super fast and easy way. This can be incredibly useful when you want to collaborate on a project together with someone else, or if you’re running several computers in different rooms around the home or office.
In this tutorial I will explain how to set up screen sharing, ensure security is fully considered, and outline how it can be done even if you don’t have a WiFi connection available.
