Are you looking for a good way to have fun on your Mac but don’t really consider yourself a gamer? Perhaps you’re nostalgic for the days when playing a game involved a couple of dice, a colorful board and some interestingly shaped pieces to move around that board.

Well you’re in luck because there are a ton of board game apps out there for Mac. You can stick with the classics (there’s at least one version out there of every big name board game you can think of) or you can try some board games that you might not often find in physical form. Those are less common, but I’m going to take you through the classics and then point you in the direction of some you might not have seen before.

Galcon Fusion is a strategy game sometimes described as “Risk, in space, in real-time.”  Players begin with a planet that generates a certain number of ships per minute (based on size), and must strategically use those ships to overpower the forces of opponents in order to seize control of all planets on the map.  When moving ships between planets, you can choose any percentage between 5% and 100% (in increments of 5%) that represents the size of the fleet leaving the planet.

As a long time fan of gaming (real-time strategy games, in particular), I was excited to get my hands dirty with the Mac/iPad follow-up to the popular Galcon for iPhone.  Galcon Fusion carries on the same concept as the original, but bringing it to the bigger screen, along with several new game modes.

Who said that OS X isn’t a platform for gamers? Whilst we may still be a long way from being able to run all the latest game releases, a wide range of software with stunning graphics and compelling gameplay is available.

Today we’ll be taking a look at 50 fantastic games for OS X. Most of them are commercial (you’ll need to pay for them!), but together they showcase that the Mac is rapidly earning the reputation of a solid gaming machine.
